This customer booked her dogs for Thanksgiving weekend 2 years in a row. Her dogs were elderly and otherwise never exposed to other dogs. Thanksgiving is the busiest time of our year and means the maximum exposure to other dogs. We urged this customer to look for accommodations with less exposure to other dogs.
No, we do not. Any dogs showing symptoms are immediately quarantined and owners are asked to pick them up. Unfortunately, like humans, dogs have been spreading the germs way before symptoms show up. If your dogs is sick, please keep the home.
Like the human cold, Bordatella cannot be “cured”, but the symptoms can be treated much the same as humans. However, anyone fighting a cold may be more susceptible to further infections so it is important to keep an eye on your pup. Ultimately, it is the owner’s assessment and decision.
There are at least 15 pathogens that cause kennel cough in dogs. Like the human flu vaccine, manufacturers do their best to create vaccines that protect against the most common 2-3 pathogens. The vaccine does not prevent 100% of dogs from getting Bordatella, but it usually lessons duration/symptoms for those who do get it.
